Family Portraits in St. Paul & the Twin Cities
Your family as it really is right now: the hugs, the inside jokes, the toddler who won't sit still. Relaxed, natural family portraits at home, at a favorite park, or anywhere that feels like you.

What your family photo session looks like
Family sessions last about an hour, which is plenty of time for everyone to warm up without anyone (especially the little ones) running out of steam. We'll start with a few classic family portraits while everyone's fresh, the kind you'll frame or put on the holiday card. Then we'll move into walks, games and snuggles that bring out real smiles.
Grandparents, cousins and the family dog are all welcome. Extended family photos are a wonderful way to mark a reunion or a visit home.
Where to take family pictures in the Twin Cities
At home: in-home lifestyle sessions feel cozy and personal, and they're especially easy with babies and toddlers.
Outdoors: St. Paul and the Twin Cities are full of beautiful parks, river overlooks and tree-lined streets. Local favorites include Como Park, Hidden Falls Regional Park and the Mississippi River bluffs in St. Paul, or Lake Elmo Park Reserve and the river valley views at Afton State Park to the east. Or we can find a spot close to home.
I photograph families all around St. Paul and the Twin Cities, including Roseville, Maplewood, Woodbury, Cottage Grove, Lake Elmo, Afton, Eagan and Edina.
Tips for great family photos
- Coordinate, don't match. Pick two or three colors and mix them across the family. Soft neutrals and muted tones photograph beautifully.
- Plan around nap time. Little ones do best when they're rested and fed. Bring snacks and a favorite toy, just in case.
- Chase the golden hour. The hour or so before sunset gives warm, flattering light for outdoor family portraits.
- Let go of perfect. The giggles between the posed shots often end up being everyone's favorites.

Family portrait questions
Who can be in our family photos?
Whoever makes up your family! Parents, kids, grandparents, cousins and pets are all welcome. If you're planning a big extended-family group, mention it when you book so we can plan the hour well.
How often should we take family pictures?
Many families update their portraits once a year, often in the fall in time for holiday cards. Kids change so fast that every year is worth remembering.
Can we do our family photos at home?
Absolutely. In-home sessions are relaxed and personal, and they're a great choice for families with babies or little ones who are happiest in their own space.
